Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has once again found herself in hot water following the search of her Washington, DC home as part of a continuing criminal investigation said to be looking into her immigration documents. This comes after controversy arose from her financial disclosures due to a significant change in the value of assets shared with her husband. Homeland Security Investigations searched her home on Monday morning, pursuant to a warrant issued by the Department of Justice. According to anonymous sources cited by Fox News Digital, CBS News and the New York Post.

There is nothing to indicate that Omar has committed any criminal activity, and no details regarding the information under scrutiny have been provided by the authorities. Neither authorities nor Omar’s office have publicly provided details on what is under scrutiny. Omar and her office had not immediately issued a public statement.

There is also a need for more context concerning her finances at home, especially since numbers in federal filings are subject to changes in valuation and revisions.

Federal agents search Omar's home as immigration paperwork comes under scrutiny

According to Fox News Digital, several agents from HSI could be seen outside the Washington residence of Omar on Monday morning, starting at around 6 am. The Department of Homeland Security was leading the operation together with HSI, while the Justice Department was also part of the team.

A DOJ spokesperson said HSI executed a “judicially authorized search warrant” secured by the department.

Fox News quoted the spokesperson as calling it part of an “ongoing federal investigation.” CBS News reported the statement as describing an “ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The department has not explained any allegations or what investigators were seeking.

According to Fox News Digital, citing sources familiar with the case, the investigation was linked to the immigration papers of Omar from her childhood, which had been signed by her father.

The government hasn’t published any report on the documents being reviewed or the findings of misconduct after the raid.

Fox News earlier claimed that the border czar at the White House, Tom Homan, had revealed that there was a criminal probe of Omar that had been going on in September. He hasn’t made the details of the case public.

According to the congresswoman, she hadn’t been contacted by the Department of Homeland Security regarding the probe in September. The latest search brings more developments to the case.

Why Omar's financial disclosures attracted attention

The federal search has renewed interest in a separate issue: changes in the value of assets Omar reported alongside her husband, Tim Mynett.

According to Fox News, a 2024 financial report showed Omar and her husband holding assets in the range of roughly $6 million to $30 million, driven largely by two businesses tied to Mynett.

Her 2025 report put their combined assets at no more than $125,000, with a lower bound of about $20,000. This was a drop of as much as $29.9 million from the earlier upper figure.

Omar’s office has said the original filing was inaccurate: that it reflected the businesses’ total equity rather than her husband’s ownership share, and that it listed assets without accounting for liabilities.

She also filed a revised 2024 disclosure in March. Her spokeswoman said the amended disclosure is “complete and accurate.”

House Oversight Chairman James Comer has called for an ethics committee investigation into the revision. The nonpartisan Office of Congressional Conduct has reportedly voted 5-1 to recommend that the House Ethics Committee dismiss allegations that she filed false or incomplete information.

The disclosures also list debts. Omar and her husband each reported separate liabilities of $15,000 to $50,000, which Fox says are her student loans and his credit card debt, or $30,000 to $100,000 combined.

Comparing the lowest reported asset value with the combined debt range would imply a negative net worth. That comparison pairs a range’s floor with debts of uncertain size, so it cannot by itself show the household’s real net worth.

Assets and liabilities are reported on financial disclosure forms, and valuations can differ from one reporting period to another. Understanding the difference requires an analysis of the holdings involved, the valuations, and any adjustments to previously filed reports.

This simply means that the numbers are another reason for scrutiny, not necessarily evidence of financial fraud. Nor do they prove any connection to the immigration records investigation.
