Ferry carrying over 270 passengers capsizes off Northern Cyprus; 8 dead, 23 missing

A ferry carrying more than 270 passengers capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday, leaving eight people dead, while rescue teams were still trying to reach 23 others, according to the Turkish Cypriot leader, as reported by CNN Turk and Reuters.

The catamaran-style vessel was en route from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province.

According to Turkish state-run TRT news channel, the ferry began taking in water a few kilometres off the coast.

Northern Cyprus Transportation Minister Erhan Arikli told TRT that the vessel had overturned and rescue crews were already at the scene.
