EU to work on solution to financing Ukraine ahead of new summit: Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday the EU would work on an operational solution to financing Ukraine ahead of a new European Union summit early in 2024.

She was speaking at the end of a summit where EU leaders opened accession talks for Ukraine but failed to get agreement on a deal to finance the country.

"There is now a new rendez-vous early next year. And we will use as a Commission the time until then to make sure that whatever happens at this next European Council, we will have an operational solution," Von der Leyen said.


She added that it is necessary to work on "alternative solutions" in case no unanimity can be found on financing Ukraine.
