BELEM: The European Union (EU) offered its vision of the road map to transition away from fossil fuels late on Wednesday evening during the UN Climate Change Conference, or COP30, in Belem, Brazil.

The commission suggested a proposal that does justice to all the elements of the UAE consensus of 2023-tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling of the rate of energy efficiency by 2030. "It is not about making the right statements. It is also a matter of making sure that there is a large majority of nations that can actually support the goals," said Wopke Hoekstra, EU Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth.

"We were asked by the Brazilian presidency to give inputs on what we think could create a broader majority. The question is, can other parties see themselves in this proposal?" asked Lars Aagaard, Denmark's minister for energy and climate change.

Hoekstra said he had discussed the issue with India's Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, and with ministers from other countries like China.

The EU proposal recognises that the effort must reflect common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities of countries in light of national circumstances. The roadmap must be geared to transition away from fossils in a just and orderly manner.
