New Delhi: Representatives of ethnic and politically marginalised sections of people from China - Uighurs, Tibetans, Hong Kongers and South Mongolians, among others, marched on the rainy streets of downtown Tokyo recently, to mark International Human Rights Day.

Despite the inclement weather and the rising number of Covid 19 cases, the nearly 150 activists, including Japanese citizens, turned out to the theme of ‘Give back our countries’, protesting the violation of human rights and curtailment of civil liberty and political freedoms in different parts of the artificially ‘united’ China, according to one of the participants.

The year 2020, when COVID has laid everyone low, has seen activism against China pick up in Japan significantly, with numerous protests, whether by affected groups directly (Southern Mongolians, Hong Kongers), or collectively as on 5 December.

The common theme being to seek answers from China, which wishes to be a global power, but fails consistently to live up to even basic expectations on providing basic rights to its own people, according to the protesters.

The International Human Rights Day is observed on 10 December every year, to mark the day when the Universal Declaration on Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly.
