‘Elections matter!’: Houston Mayor moves to curb ICE cooperation after Democrats’ Texas win
Houston is set to change how its local authorities cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with Mayor John Whitmire announcing new restrictions on Friday following Democrats' election victory in Texas. Under the proposed approach, Houston will prioritise immigrants considered a threat to public safety rather than targeting those who are working, studying or living with their families. Routine traffic stops and minor violations that do not involve violence or jailable offences would no longer automatically trigger contact with ICE.
