Eight dead in northwest China earthquake

At least eight people have died in a shallow earthquake that struck northwest China overnight, authorities said Tuesday according to the state-run news outlet Xinhua.

Rescue work was ongoing, the outlet said, after a 5.9-magnitude quake sent strong tremors through parts of Gansu and neighbouring Qinghai province when it struck at 11:59 pm local time Monday (1559 GMT).
