Egypt military court to try Muslim Brotherhood's supreme leader, 83 other Islamists

CAIRO: Outlawed Muslim Brotherhood's supreme leader and 83 other Islamists have been transferred to military court to face trial on charges of attacking public and governmental buildings and inciting violence in Egypt.

The defendants have been charged with attacking a governmental building in the Upper Egyptian city of Qena, inciting violence and damaging public buildings, state-run MENA news agency reported.

The defendants include senior Brotherhood leader Mohamed el-Beltagi and cleric Safwat Hegazy.

Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood leaders and supporters of Mohammed Morsi have been rounded up and put on trial since the army deposed the Islamist president in 2013 following massive street protests against his rule.

Morsi is currently in prison over a number of charges including killing peaceful protesters, espionage, escaping from prison during the January 25 Revolution in 2011, insulting the judiciary.

He was also charged with spying and handing documents of national security importance to foreign intelligence.

He has not been sentenced in any case so far.
