Emirates airline has suspended check-in services at Dubai International Airport (DXB) for all flights scheduled on April 17, citing safety concerns and operational disruptions. Passengers have been urged to contact the airline for assistance and rebooking options.
Meanwhile, flydubai announced the partial resumption of operations at DXB, with select outbound flights operating from Terminal 2. Full scheduled operations were expected to resume gradually, starting from Terminal 3 after midnight.
The severe weather conditions in Dubai caused massive traffic congestions on major highways, prompting authorities to advise passengers to avoid travel unless necessary. Heavy rainfall, totaling up to 254 millimeters, inundated the desert landscape, leading to extensive flooding and transportation disruptions.
Tragically, one casualty was reported in Ras Al-Khaimah, underscoring the severity of the situation. Dubai's bustling airport, renowned as the world's busiest for international traffic, faced significant challenges, resulting in flight delays, cancellations, and diversions.
Some access roads to the airport were submerged, and some metro services were suspended, further exacerbating travel difficulties for passengers and airport staff.
The torrential rains not only affected Dubai but also wreaked havoc in neighboring countries like Oman and Bahrain. Oman witnessed devastating floods that claimed numerous lives, including children, underscoring the widespread impact of the extreme weather event.
Climatologists expressed concerns that such intense storms could be exacerbated by climate change. The record rainfall in Dubai is the highest, dating back to 1949 when record-keeping started.
