Dream Bazaar Mall, located in the Gulistan-e-Johar area of Karachi, was an ambitious project initiated by a Pakistani businessman living abroad. The mall's opening had generated significant anticipation due to special discounts offered to attract customers. The excitement quickly turned into disorder shortly after the mall opened its doors at 3pm.
As soon as the gates were unlocked, a massive crowd surged forward, overwhelming the security personnel and forcing their way into the mall. According to videos circulating on social media, the frenzied crowd began vandalizing property and looting stores. They were seen attacking the security personnel who were attempting to control the situation.
Shattered glass, scattered merchandise, and overturned fixtures were strewn across the mall as people seized whatever they could get their hands on, stuffing bags with stolen goods or carrying items away in their arms. Numerous individuals filmed themselves stealing from the stores, seemingly unashamed of their actions.
"We worked for 20 days, gave more time than family... The discounts would have been available all year around. Look how the people repaid us," said a person associated with one of the stores, expressing his frustration in a video.
"When someone is trying to do good for you, be thankful! Not loot them instead," one user commented.
Another user commented, “The country which has predominantly been ruled by military has zero discipline in the civic way of life. What an irony!”
"A mob never had any religion or national label,” another commenter stated, while another joked: “That's 100% discount alright.”
The situation was exacerbated by the apparent absence of police, leaving the mall staff helpless in their attempts to manage the unruly crowd.
Dream Bazaar Mall, envisioned to be a significant addition to Karachi’s shopping scene, now faces substantial recovery efforts due to the damage inflicted. The absence of law enforcement during the incident has raised questions and concerns among citizens about public safety and the ability to maintain order during large-scale events.
The Karachi incident is a dramatic example of how a much-anticipated event can turn into a nightmare due to uncontrolled crowds, lack of security, and civic irresponsibility. The businessman behind the project now has to deal with not only financial losses but also a deeply disillusioned public sentiment.
