WASHINGTON: Following the ouster of Michael Flynn, US President Donald Trump has said he will be interviewing four candidates for the post of national security advisor and will take a decision on the appointment within a couple of days.

"I have many, many that want the job that want to be a part of it, I'll make a decision in the couple of days, but we're meeting with actually four of them tomorrow, all of whom want it," Trump told reporters travelling with him on Air Force One on his way to Melbourne, Florida for a rally.

"I've been thinking about someone for the last three or four days, we'll see what happens. I'm meeting with that person. They're all good, they're all great people," Trump said.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said that Trump will interview his acting adviser, retired Army Lt Gen Keith Kellogg; a former US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton; Army Lt Gen H R McMaster; and the superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, Lt Gen Robert Caslen.

The new appointment has been necessiated following Flynn's resignation at Trump's request after revelations that he misled colleagues about his Russian contacts.
