Trump taps Linda McMahon as Education Secy: Ex-WWE CEO to send ‘education back to states’
US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Linda McMahon, former WWE executive and political figure, as the next Secretary of Education. Trump outlined his vision for education reform, stating, "We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort." McMahon’s nomination highlights her advocacy for parental rights and school choice, marking a shift in federal education policies.

From Wrestling to the Cabinet

McMahon rose to prominence as the CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), a global entertainment powerhouse. Alongside her husband Vince McMahon, she built WWE into an influential cultural brand. Her connection with Trump dates back to WWE events, including a high-profile appearance by Trump at WrestleMania in 2007.

Shifting gears, McMahon entered politics, running twice for the US Senate in Connecticut but losing both times. Later, she focused on supporting Republican candidates, including Trump, donating $6 million to his 2016 campaign.

A Background in Education Advocacy

Though primarily known for her business acumen, McMahon has expressed a longstanding interest in education. She served briefly on the Connecticut Board of Education in 2009 and was a trustee at Sacred Heart University. While her direct experience in education policy is limited, McMahon supports school choice and charter schools, aligning with conservative educational priorities.

Leadership in Trump’s First Administration

McMahon served as the head of the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s initial presidency. Her tenure was marked by her promotion of Trump’s tax and trade policies and by bipartisan praise. Senator Richard Blumenthal called her “a person of serious accomplishment and ability,” and Senator Chris Murphy described her as “a talented and experienced businessperson.”

Unlike many of her contemporaries in Trump’s cabinet, McMahon avoided significant controversy during her tenure and was recognised by Trump as “a superstar.”

Continued Role in Trump’s Political Sphere

After leaving the SBA in 2019, McMahon remained closely aligned with Trump. She led America First Action, a super PAC supporting his 2020 re-election bid, and later co-founded the America First Policy Institute to advance Trump’s agenda. Currently, McMahon co-chairs Trump’s transition team alongside Howard Lutnick, preparing for a potential second term.

Trump’s Education Plan in Focus

McMahon’s appointment underscores Trump’s broader vision for education reform, centred on decentralisation and greater parental involvement. Her leadership signals a new direction for federal education policy, reflecting conservative principles and reinforcing Trump’s commitment to reshape governance at all levels.
