Donald Trump calls for end to Russian expulsion from G7 grouping
Russia was expelled from what was then called the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Trump said, “I have been Russia’s worst nightmare,” Trump claimed, “but with that being said, Russia should be in this meeting.”

This year's G7 summit comes at a time, when leaders of seven major economies view the current international order as a historic division between Washington and its major allies in North America, Europe and Asia.
A few days ago, the Trump dispensation slapped stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on five of its six G7 partners. It also recently kicked off a trade investigation that could trigger additional tariffs on imported cars.
Donald Trumps's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal also demonstrated his reluctance to toe the line of his allies.
In a combined effort, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau failed recently to convince Trump not to impose tariffs on the allies.
Reason behind Russia's suspension from G8 grouping
Russia was expelled from what was then called the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
Russia was suspended from the G8 club in 2014, as the former American President Barack Obama promised to “impose a greater cost” on the Kremlin if the ongoing confrontation over Ukraine escalates. Since then, the G8 was effectively suspended and the world’s richest countries met as the G7.
President Obama had rationalised his move by adding that the main fear was Mr Putin's expansion beyond Crimea and moving into eastern Europe. Obama further further justified his action by saying these diplomatic efforts are designed to deter Russia from taking this step.
