The earthquake has inflicted significant damage on numerous buildings and heritage sites, including the renowned red walls surrounding the historic city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in Ighil, a mountain town located 72 kilometers southwest of the popular tourist destination, Marrakesh, in the Al Haouz Province. The quake struck at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.
According to the US Geological Survey, the initial earthquake struck at 11:11 pm, with the ground shaking for several seconds. However, Morocco's National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network recorded it as a magnitude 7 event on the Richter scale.
Reports also indicate extensive damage to vehicles and properties in various cities, including Marrakesh and Ouarzazate. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded in the streets as individuals mourned the loss of their loved ones.
Tragically, there are concerns that several people may still be trapped beneath the rubble, and it is expected that the death toll will rise as search and rescue operations continue.
