Morocco earthquake: Death toll rises to 632 after 6.8 magnitude quake; over 300 injured
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on Friday night, causing extensive devastation. The event, captured by a CCTV camera, has led to a tragic loss of life, with at least 800 people reported dead and over 329 injured. This dramatic footage, circulated on social media, reveals the unsettling moments as buildings trembled and collapsed, prompting frantic efforts to seek safety.

In a brief 28-second video, individuals are seen going about their daily routines when the earthquake unexpectedly strikes. As the ground shakes, panic ensues, and people scramble to escape the impending danger. The collapse of buildings adds to the chaos in a matter of seconds.

The earthquake has inflicted significant damage on numerous buildings and heritage sites, including the renowned red walls surrounding the historic city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Ighil, a mountain town located 72 kilometers southwest of the popular tourist destination, Marrakesh, in the Al Haouz Province. The quake struck at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.

According to the US Geological Survey, the initial earthquake struck at 11:11 pm, with the ground shaking for several seconds. However, Morocco's National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network recorded it as a magnitude 7 event on the Richter scale.

Just 19 minutes after the first quake, a 4.9-magnitude aftershock rattled the country, as reported by the US agency. The quake's effects were felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and Algeria's Civil Defense agency.

Reports also indicate extensive damage to vehicles and properties in various cities, including Marrakesh and Ouarzazate. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded in the streets as individuals mourned the loss of their loved ones.

Tragically, there are concerns that several people may still be trapped beneath the rubble, and it is expected that the death toll will rise as search and rescue operations continue.
