US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has shared a video of their detention centres on social media X. Immigration detention is not about punishment; it’s a legal step in enforcing removal orders, not a prison sentence, ICE wrote on X. Contrary to popular belief, ICE said it only detains people who are subject to final removal proceedings, not just anyone without documents. Detention is temporary and used while a noncitizen awaits a ruling on whether they’ll be removed from the U.S. ICE emphasises that detention under immigration law is not the same as serving time for a crime.
