The dispute began during Desert Ridge's 14-12 win over Vail Cienega High School on October 2, 2026. Brewer said he changed the play because he trusted his running back to help secure the victory. He was reportedly dismissed from the team three days later.
What did Gunner Brewer do during the football game?
The disagreement centred on a move known as an audible. In American football, a coach gives the team a play before the action begins. The quarterback can sometimes change that play after assessing the opposing team's positionBrewer said the original play required him to run with the ball, but he decided to give it to his running back instead.
“I definitely wanted him to run the ball and get us the first down to basically seal the game,” Brewer told Arizona's Family. A first down allows a team to continue its attack by gaining the required distance, usually 10 yards over four attempts.
Brewer also said the team's previous offensive coordinator had allowed him to change plays in similar situations. The coordinator left the programme in September, according to reports.
Why was Brewer removed from the team?
Brewer said head coach Miles Smith spoke to him after the game and accused him of disrespecting the coach. According to Brewer's mother, Marie Brewer, Smith told her son he was no longer part of the team.“Hey, I felt like you disrespected me, and I can’t have that on my team. You’re off. Get your stuff and go,” Smith reportedly told Brewer, according to his mother's account to The Arizona Republic.
Brewer said he was disappointed because he wanted to complete his senior season with his teammates. The circumstances surrounding his dismissal remain disputed, and the school had not publicly provided a full response to the allegations.
Why were 12 Desert Ridge football players suspended?
The controversy escalated during a meeting between players and coaches after Brewer's removal. According to accounts reported by The Arizona Republic, offensive lineman Will Stark asked teammates who wanted Brewer back, prompting several players to show their support.Twelve players reportedly walked out of the meeting and were suspended for the rest of the season. Five of them were seniors.
Brewer praised his teammates for standing by him. “They definitely had my back, and I have theirs 100%,” he told Arizona's Family.
However, school athletic director Kevin Swann offered a different account in a letter to football parents. According to reporting, Swann said players had been given an opportunity to express their views. He said the meeting ended with instructions for players to separate into offensive and defensive groups, after which a group chose to leave practice. The differing accounts have raised questions about what happened during the meeting and why the players were suspended.
