Democrats will pass a bill to stop Iran war, Trump Tariffs’ says US Representative Ted Lieu
Democrats will push legislation to end the US war with Iran and stop President Donald Trump's tariffs from driving up prices, US Representative Ted Lieu said after the party's sweeping gains in Tuesday's midterm elections, signalling an effort to challenge key parts of the administration's agenda when the new Congress convenes.

"We will pass a bill to restore the ACA tax credits, we will pass a bill to stop the stupid Trump tariffs jacking up prices on Americans, and we will pass a bill to stop the Iran war," Lieu said, according to ANI.

Democrats' victories in both chambers of Congress will give the party greater power to scrutinise Trump's policies, block legislation and use its control of congressional committees to launch investigations.

However, their ability to reverse the president's actions remains constrained by his executive powers and the prospect of a presidential veto.

On Iran, Democrats have repeatedly attempted to use the War Powers Resolution to halt US military action.

The House had passed three resolutions seeking to end the conflict, but none reached Trump's desk. The Senate had also backed a similar resolution on one occasion before Republicans reversed course the following day, as per a report by The Guardian.

A Democratic-controlled Congress could again seek to restrict the war through legislation or funding measures. However, Trump could veto such legislation, and Democrats would need a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override him, a threshold they do not hold.

On tariffs, Democrats have argued that import duties raise costs for American businesses and consumers.

The party could push for exemptions or seek to limit the administration's tariff powers, but a broader reversal of Trump's trade policy would face legal and executive hurdles.

The change in congressional control will take effect in January. Until then, Republicans will retain their majorities in both chambers, while Trump will continue to exercise presidential powers.
