Democrat Senate nominee from US State of Michigan pulls up Pakistan for lack of democracy

Democratic nominee for the US Senate from Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, has slammed Pakistan’s powerful military establishment and called for the restoration of democratic and political freedoms in the country at a recent Pakistani-American gathering in Michigan.

Speaking at an event organised by the Pakistan Association of America, El-Sayed said Pakistan does not have the space for genuine democratic rule and raised concerns over the imprisonment and intimidation of political leaders, including former prime minister Imran Khan.

“On the 79th anniversary of Pakistan, we also have to be clear that right now, democracy is not being allowed to take its place," El-Sayed said.

The Democrat also criticised the treatment of political leaders and referred to the imprisonment of Khan while arguing that political figures should not face intimidation or incarceration for challenging those in power.

El-Sayed could be the first Muslim origin Senator in the USA if he wins the election.
