Democrat Josh Turek won Iowa's open US Senate race against Republican Ashley Hinson
Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa’s open US Senate race, flipping a Republican-held seat and helping Democrats secure control of the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The victory makes Turek the first Democrat since Barack Obama in 2012 to win a federal election in Iowa.

Turek, a state representative and former Paralympian, won the contest to succeed retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst, who was not seeking a third term. The closely watched race attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign advertising as both parties fought for control of the Senate.

Iowa, which has backed Republicans in recent election cycles, emerged as a competitive battleground amid rising fuel prices, manufacturing job losses, pressure on the agricultural economy and concerns over healthcare access and water quality.

Hinson, who had initially campaigned as a close ally of President Donald Trump, shifted her messaging towards bipartisan cooperation in the final months of the campaign. She also criticised aspects of the administration's approach, including the economic impact of the war, but continued to campaign alongside Trump during his visits to the state.

In September, Hinson said Iowans should not have to bear the cost of the war. However, she opposed a resolution seeking to restrict Trump's ability to continue military action without congressional approval, arguing that it would not help bring the conflict to an immediate and successful end.

Turek, meanwhile, sought to appeal to voters across party lines, criticising Hinson for her support of Trump while promising to work with the president on issues such as immigration enforcement and border security.

The result marks a turnaround for Democrats in a state where Obama was the last Democrat to win a statewide federal election, in 2012. Turek had also received Obama's endorsement after securing his party's nomination.
