A blast at a mosque in Pakistan's Peshawar killed at least 25, with the death toll rising to 46 some time later, and injured at least 150 others, officials said. The attack happened at the mosque inside a police headquarters during afternoon prayers.

The main hospital in Peshawar declared the situation as an emergency. "It's an emergency situation," Muhammad Asim Khan, a spokesman for the main hospital in Peshawar, told AFP.

According to officials, the blast came from among the second row of worshippers at the mosque. Bomb disposing teams are probing the possibility of a suicide attack. The explosion took place seconds after prayers were started.

The police headquarters in Peshawar is in one of the most tightly controlled areas of the city, housing intelligence and counter-terrorism bureaus, and is next door to the regional secretariat, reported AFP.

"I saw black smoke rising to the sky. I ran out to save my life," Shahid Ali, a 47-year-old worshipper told AFP. "The screams of the people are still echoing in my mind," he added. "People were screaming for help."

Nobody has claimed responsibility of the brutal attack yet said Saddique Khan, a senior police official in Peshawar. However, the Pakistani Taliban have been blamed for such suicide attacks in the past.
