DC crime falls sharply; Mayor cites federal help, backs Trump on infrastructure

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Wednesday (August 27) that Washington had seen a sharp reduction in violent crime following the recent federal surge, including an 87% drop in carjackings over the past 20 days. “We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city,” Bowser told media, while also voicing support for U.S. President Trump’s $2 billion request to improve federal infrastructure in the district. Bowser acknowledged ongoing concerns about police-community trust, emphasizing, “We have had fewer gun crimes, fewer homicides,” but stressed the need for federal resources to focus on violent crime and community support.
