The US has called on Bangladesh to ensure legal representation for all detainees, emphasising adherence to basic human rights principles, reported TOI.

The statement came hours after a Chattogram court deferred the bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari by a month, citing the absence of legal counsel.

Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, highlighted the importance of access to legal representation during a routine briefing. Responding to questions about Chinmoy Krishna, who faces sedition charges, Patel reiterated that detained individuals must receive appropriate legal protections, as per the TOI report.

He underscored the US's broader expectations for governments to respect fundamental freedoms, religious rights, and human dignity.

In Dhaka, interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus invited Indian journalists to independently investigate allegations of persecution against Hindus and other minorities. He stated the government’s commitment to countering misinformation and promoting unity amidst growing domestic and international criticism.

Yunus, after meeting with leaders from various political parties—excluding Sheikh Hasina's Awami League—dismissed reports of attacks on Hindus as “propaganda.” He urged political figures to avoid provocation, reaffirming Bangladesh’s resilience against "fabricated narratives."
