BEIJING: China has directed troops of the world's largest standing army to strengthen border controls even while maintaining friendly relations with neighbouring countries.

China needs to improve border control while nurturing friendship with its neighbours, said vice chairman of Central Military Commission (CMC) Fan Changlong on a recent tour of the country's northern border.

CMC headed by President Xi Jinping is the highest authority of the Chinese military.

Fan inspected border troops stationed in Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Jilin, said a press release.

Border troops, bearing an important responsibility to the country, should always stay alert, loyal and devoted, Fan said.

Troops should make good use of information technology to strengthen border control and improve training, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

They should also improve exchange with troops from neighbouring countries, fully implement bilateral border agreements and settle disputes through negotiation to enhance mutual trust and create a friendly environment, he said.

Fan also stressed the importance of disciplining soldiers and officers, fighting corruption and raising moral standards.
