China's exports are facing complex and severe external situation: Customs spokesperson says "sky will not fall"

Chinese Customs spokesperson on Monday said that the country's exports are facing a complex and severe external situation but said that the "world will not fall". However, the Customs deputy director general said that bilateral trade with the US continued to grow by 4 per cent even under the interference and impact of tariffs imposed by the United States.

The Donald Trump administration has imposed a tariff of 125 per cent on China.



Further, China said that exports soared 12.4 percent year-on-year last month, beating expectations.

The Customs said that China's domestic demand market is broad, adding that the country is actively building a diversified market and deepening cooperation with all parties in the supply chain.

The spokesperson, in a statement, said that the year-on-year decline in imports in the first quarter was mainly due to the decline in international product prices and fewer working days.

The spokesperson added that the Customs would strengthen the inspection and quarantine of imported products strictly in accordance with laws and regulations. This comes after the department detected salmonella in imported American poultry meat and bonemeal.
