China on Tuesday expressed hope that ongoing Iran-US engagements would create an opportunity for a diplomatic resolution, while also taking an apparent swipe at the Quad grouping over its growing strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Responding to questions on Iran-US talks, the Chinese foreign ministry said it hoped “parties seize opportunity to find resolution through talks,” signalling Beijing’s support for continued diplomatic engagement amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

On the Quad’s reported agreement related to the Fiji port, China said it believes “cooperation among countries should promote regional peace stability” and should not undermine trust among nations in the region.

The ministry further said it does not support “creating exclusive camps,” in comments widely seen as directed at the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue comprising India, United States, Japan and Australia.

Beijing has repeatedly criticised the Quad, arguing that regional partnerships should not target third countries or create bloc-based divisions in the Indo-Pacific.
