BEIJING: China today voiced its opposition over a senior US official meeting with the Dalai Lama on his 80th birthday, asking America to honour its "commitment" to recognise Tibet as part of the country.

"China is strongly displeased by and opposed to a senior US official meeting with the Dalai Lama in disregard of China's multiple representations," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Hua's comments came after President Barack Obama's senior adviser Valerie Jarrett took part in the Tibetan spiritual leader's birthday "celebrations" in New York on Friday.

"We urge the US side to honor its commitment to recognising Tibet as part of China and not supporting 'Tibet independence' and take concrete measures to rectify mistakes and undo any harm done," Hua said in a statement.

She called on the United States to stop providing any convenience and support to "Tibet independence" forces and not let it interfere with and damage China-US relations.

Hailing the Dalai Lama as a leading figure of moral and religious authority, the US Senate in a resolution recently had greeted the Tibetan spiritual leader on his birthday.
