Bush dynasty scion, George P Bush wins first election

HOUSTON: George P Bush, a scion of the Bush dynasty that has given America two presidents, has been elected as the Texas land commissioner, becoming the first in his family to win his maiden election.

George, the son of former Florida Governor and possible 2016 White House contender Jeb Bush, was elected Texas land commissioner by a landslide margin.

George's father, his uncle George W Bush, and grandfather George H W Bush all lost their initial forays into electoral politics. So did great-grandfather and former Senator Prescott Bush.

His grandfather lost a US Senate race in Texas in 1964, while his uncle lost his 1978 congressional bid. Jeb Bush was not elected Florida governor until his second try, and Prescott Bush came up short in his first Senate race in 1950.

George, a 38-year-old Fort Worth attorney and energy consultant, raised more than $3 million against his little-known Democratic opponent, former El Paso Mayor John Cook, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

George spent months crisscrossing the state in a campaign bus adorned with his towering, grinning face.

He may have spilled a family secret last month in an interview with ABC News by saying it is "more than likely" his father Jeb Bush will run for president in 2016.

"If you had asked me a few years back, I would have said it was less likely," George said, adding that if Jeb decides to run, "The family will be behind him 100 per cent."
