BRICS to convene emergency meet on Tuesday on West Asia situation

This will be first BRICS meet since the Summit in August that resulted in expansion of the group. The meeting has been scheduled on eve of G20 summit on Wednesday under Indian presidency.

Leaders of the BRICS countries including new entrants will hold an emergency meet on Tuesday via virtual mode to discuss the situation in West Asia, including the Gaza Strip.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to take part in the conference.

"Leaders of the BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - will gather [under the South African presidency] for an emergency virtual meeting, inviting the leaders of the [new] BRICS countries - Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates," South Africa that holds the BRICS rotating presidency said in a statement on Monday.


Following Ramaphosa's opening remarks, representatives of BRICS members and invited states "will make statements on behalf of their countries on the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza tomorrow, November 21."

UN Secretary General Ant?nio Guterres will attend the meeting. It is planned that the participants of the meet may adopt a joint statement.
