New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani set to ignite a controversy by naming Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer who defended an al-Qaida member as his transition team’s Chief Counsel. Ramzi Kassem was part of the legal team that represented Ahmed al-Darbi, an al-Qaeda operative convicted in 2017 for his role in the 2002 bombing of the French oil tanker Limburg off Yemen’s coast.
