Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday that he did not meet the deadline. Bolsonaro revealed on Monday that police had asked him to hand over his passports, following a ruling from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, Reuters reported. He said the police approached him after he visited his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, in Brasilia.
The order sets a 24-hour deadline to surrender the passports and bars him from leaving the country. It also cancels all his Brazilian passports, including the diplomatic one, and covers any foreign travel documents he holds.
Moraes has also barred Bolsonaro from contacting lawyer Willer Tomaz, who is under investigation in the same money laundering probe.
The senator is under investigation in a money laundering probe. He denies wrongdoing. He has called the order politically motivated and has asked why authorities acted just after his election defeat.
Bolsonaro, the eldest son of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, lost to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a runoff vote on Sunday. Lula, 80, was seeking a fourth term.
Bolsonaro had finished first in the first round on October 4, ahead of Lula. The result defied opinion polls, which had shown Lula with a narrow lead, according to Reuters poll reports.
Jair Bolsonaro endorsed his son’s candidacy in December, Reuters reported. Moraes has also overseen the case against the former president over an alleged attempt to overturn the 2022 election.
