Kolkata: A Bangladesh court on Tuesday postponed the bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das to January 2 as no lawyer appeared in the court on his behalf to defend him. The bail hearing for Das, who was leading movements for minorities and has been accused of sedition in Bangladesh, was deferred due to the absence of lawyers. Das was arrested on November 25.

Iskcon has said that his lawyer was brutally attacked and was in the ICU in serious condition. "Please pray for advocate Ramen Roy. His only 'fault' was defending Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in court. Islamists ransacked his home and brutally attacked him, leaving him in the ICU, fighting for his life," Iskcon spokesperson Radharaman Das posted on X.

After the lawyers refused to appear for him, a Chattogram court deferred the hearing of Das' bail petition to January 2. Chattogram metropolitan session judge Saiful Islam set the new date for hearing as the defence lawyer was absent from the court. "In a civilised society if the judicial system breaks down and a person does not get justice, it is the last knell on democracy," the Iskcon VP said.

He further said that Chinmoy was targeted from the first day and even monks delivering him prasad were arrested.
