AT&T settlement has certain conditions
Millions of current and former AT&T customers could receive compensation under a $177 million class-action settlement linked to two data breaches in 2024. While some eligible claimants could receive payments before the end of 2026, most are expected to get their money in early 2027, according to a report by The Sun.

The settlement follows a class-action lawsuit alleging that AT&T failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures to protect customer information during two separate data breaches. The US District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division, granted final approval to the settlement.

Although the settlement could provide compensation to affected customers, not everyone will receive $5,000. The amount depends on eligibility requirements and the type of claim submitted.

Why is AT&T paying $177 million in settlement?

The lawsuits stem from two data breaches that occurred in March and July 2024. According to the settlement website, the incidents exposed sensitive customer information, including Social Security numbers (SSNs), phone numbers, addresses and other personal details.

The lawsuits alleged that the security failures affected more than 7.6 million current AT&T customers and 65.4 million former customers.

AT&T agreed to pay $177 million to resolve the claims without admitting wrongdoing. The settlement is intended to compensate eligible individuals who were affected by the data breaches.

AT&T settlement: Who is eligible for a $5,000 payment?

Customers seeking compensation must meet the settlement's eligibility requirements. According to the reported terms, individuals needed to submit a claim form by the deadline in December 2025 to qualify for a payment.

Claimants seeking compensation of up to $5,000 must also provide evidence that their financial losses were fairly traceable to the March 2024 data breach.

This means that simply being an affected AT&T customer does not automatically guarantee a $5,000 check. The amount a claimant receives will depend on the applicable settlement terms, the claim submitted and the supporting documentation.

Those who did not submit a claim before the deadline may not qualify for compensation under this settlement.

When will AT&T settlement checks be sent?

Payments could begin as early as December 2026, although many eligible claimants may have to wait until early 2027, the Sun reported.

Citing the settlement website, the report claime that the agreement's effective date falls 10 days after the period for appealing the final approval order expires.

According to The Sun, AT&T had a 30-day window to appeal following the October 2 timeline cited in its report, placing the potential deadline around November 2.

If the settlement becomes effective without an appeal, payments are expected to be distributed electronically or by paper check within 60 days of the effective date.

However, an appeal could delay the process. Under the agreement, the effective date would then depend on the outcome of the appeal or its dismissal, subject to the settlement's specified timelines.

So if all goes well, payments may start in December 2026. However, there is no guaranteed date for every claimant. Many recipients could receive their compensation in early 2027, the Sun claimed.

How Will AT&T Settlement Payments Be Distributed?

According to the reported settlement terms, eligible claimants can receive their payments electronically or through paper checks.

The settlement administrator will determine payment eligibility and process approved claims under the agreement. Claimants should refer to the official settlement website for updates about the payment schedule, claim status and any additional requirements.
