Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) sharply criticised major pharmaceutical companies during a Health Subcommittee hearing, accusing them of exploiting the U.S. patent system to keep drug prices artificially high. Using Humira and AstraZeneca inhalers as examples, AOC argued that drug manufacturers routinely engage in "evergreening", filing patents for minor product changes rather than genuine medical breakthroughs to block generic competition.
