In another devastating shooting incident involving schools, a 16-year-old shot at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, claiming the lives of three young kids aged 5, 8 and 11, as well as a teacher, reported NBC News. The assailant, who was named as Griffin J. John II, also died in the shooting, as did two others. However, the incident has sparked interest in the young killer’s past after it came to light that he had been involved in several controversies and conflicts through court files.

As investigators work to establish how the shooting unfolded and what motivated it, reporting based on court records has raised questions about the circumstances in which John grew up and how he obtained the shotgun used in the attack.

A report published by the Oregon Journalism Project on October 23 examined allegations involving his mother, Shauntai Nickerson, including two incidents in 2023 that could have affected her eligibility to purchase a firearm had they resulted in assault convictions.

Separate reporting by The Source in Bend has documented the father's criminal history and the family's earlier legal disputes.

The records provide valuable information; however, there is no indication of the motive behind the shooting or whether the family’s history contributed to the attack.

The motive has yet to be revealed by authorities, while how the teenager obtained the gun was an important aspect of the investigation.

Court records reveal earlier allegations involving the shooter’s mother

The purchase of the Mossberg Maverick 88 pump-action rifle by Nickerson in August 2026 is attributed to the Oregon Journalism Project. Sources within law enforcement indicated that the gun was legally purchased, though no information on how he acquired it has been released by the authorities.

The outlet’s review of Deschutes County court records found that Nickerson was accused of assault in two separate incidents in 2023. She was not charged in the first case.

In the second case, she was charged with assault and harassment, but pleaded guilty to harassment charges in October 2023. The assault charges were dropped after two weeks.

The prosecutors claimed that the prosecutor of the case felt that the available evidence was not enough to obtain an assault conviction.

This point is important because according to Oregon law, anyone who has been convicted of violent misdemeanours within the last four years cannot purchase firearms. Had either allegation resulted in a qualifying conviction, Nickerson’s eligibility to purchase the shotgun could have been affected, the Oregon Journalism Project reported.

The documents do not show any illegal purchase of the firearm by Nickerson. Rather, they bring to focus the point that previous proceedings can affect future decisions on eligibility to possess firearms.

The same report also described a separate 2023 incident involving Nickerson and her adult daughter. Nickerson was not arrested or charged in connection with that incident, according to the records reviewed by the outlet.

The shooter’s father and earlier domestic violence cases

The investigation into John’s family background also extends to his father, Griffin J. John, whose legal history includes a felony conviction for assaulting a public safety officer and subsequent weapons-related cases.

The reporting done by The Source, which is a magazine from Bend, showed that the older John had been involved in criminal activity even decades ago. It also emerged from the court documents that the man had been found guilty of crimes relating to weapons he was forbidden to have due to being a felon.

The father had reportedly been homeless in Astoria and had not seen his son for more than a year before the shooting, according to reporting cited by Oregon news outlets.

Court records also document domestic violence in the younger John’s childhood.

In 2014, when the boy was four, his mother’s then-partner, Kyle Duncan, pleaded guilty to felony assault and coercion against Nickerson. Those convictions were later vacated after Duncan completed a domestic violence deferred sentencing programme, according to the Oregon Journalism Project.

Nickerson subsequently referred to Duncan as someone who helped care for her children in a separate court matter.

The family’s history included custody disputes and periods of instability. However, such records cannot independently explain why a person commits an act of violence. They offer background for investigators examining the teenager’s circumstances, rather than evidence establishing his motive.

Many people suffer from tough childhood experiences without becoming violent, according to experts cited by the Oregon Journalism Project. Each case needs to be studied on its own merits, taking into account factors such as availability of firearms and any special signs.

How the teenager obtained the shotgun remains a key question

The firearm used in the attack has become one of the central issues in the investigation. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting, the shotgun was purchased legally by Nickerson in August.

The manner through which the gun came into his possession has not been disclosed by investigators.

According to Oregon law, it is permissible for a teenager aged 16 or 17 years to possess a rifle or a shotgun depending on particular situations, such as parental consent.

Some media reports have described the shotgun as a birthday gift from Nickerson to her son, but the Oregon Journalism Project said it had not independently verified that claim. The precise circumstances of the transfer therefore remain unconfirmed.

Legal scholars have warned that prosecuting a parent for their child’s conduct must be backed by substantial proof in support of the allegations.

It is not sufficient that a parent had bought the gun used during the crime because they will have to prove all the elements of the charge, one of which may include awareness of the risk and inaction.

The police are also investigating the digital communications of the suspect and other clues to the crime. According to reports from Oregon Public Broadcasting, investigators have not identified a motive yet, nor do they have information regarding the existence of links between the suspect and any extreme groups.

Thus, while court documents have broadened the sphere of attention, several important details about the incident still need to be clarified – how the boy had accessed the shotgun and whether there was awareness of a particular danger and the reason why he decided to shoot at his old school.

The investigation will need to establish those facts independently. The family’s documented legal history may help explain the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s upbringing, but it cannot substitute for evidence about the decisions and events that led to the October 15 attack.
