Apple has told customers who are having issues with their screens to reach out to AppleCare in order to obtain a new screen.
It poses a real issue to buyers of the newly launched foldable iPhone as to whether they will be eligible, the nature of the problem and what is causing it.
Who can request an Apple iPhone Duo replacement?
Apple has now confirmed that any iPhone Duo user facing issues with the inner screen of their device needs to get in touch with AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not recall the entire range but stated that there were some iPhones with a problem.According to Apple, it was aware of the issue involving the inner screen of certain iPhone Duos. It has instructed customers with such problems to contact its customer support.
This is because anyone who sees cracks, strange lines, or other signs of damage to their screen must report the problem and not take it to be just wear and tear from a foldable screen.
It is important to note that the corporation has not released any guidelines on who qualifies for replacement, nor has it stated whether all complaints about faulty screens would automatically be eligible for replacement. It would be wise to contact AppleCare in order to have one's situation analysed.
In addition to that, the corporation has not released any figures on how widespread the problem is, or whether there would be a recall campaign conducted by Apple.
What is causing cracks near the iPhone Duo hinge?
This issue has been noticed due to the presence of cracks and lines on certain damaged devices that are located in proximity to the central hinge, which is the part responsible for opening and closing the Duo iPhone. So far, no cause of the problem has been detected by Apple. However, iFixit, a repair shop, suggests a possible cause based on their analysis of teardown videos, patents, and CT scans used to make a 3D simulation of the hinge assembly.
As iFixit suggests, their simulation showed that the problem is located right where the display cable is routed under the screen, near the central support bar. This means that if the support bar stays in place when the phone is folded, it can create a mechanical stress spot.
Folding can possibly put stress on this area; however, it is not clear from the simulation whether this caused any trouble to the malfunctioning phones.
Apple has not issued any statement concerning iFixit’s report, and thus there has been no explanation regarding the issue with the screen. At this point, it is too early to say that the hinge design is the cause of such problems.
There was another positive discovery that the test results revealed. According to iFixit, the iPhone Duo is the easiest-to-repair foldable smartphone it has tested before.
How Apple's response compares with earlier foldable phone problems
The timing of these complaints is an initial challenge for the first foldable smartphone from Apple. The new model was launched in high demand, with only a small number available, and there were concerns that production of the sophisticated gadget was potentially affecting the supply of this device.
A replacement option provides customers who have problems with their smartphones with an opportunity to solve the issue, although the effects of the problem will depend on its scope and cause that Apple will prove to have.
Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president of market research firm IDC, said that Apple's move is the right step to take. He also compared the issue of Apple with the one experienced by Samsung Galaxy Fold back in 2019.
This case showed some of the challenges faced by manufacturers when releasing their foldable phones into the market. A smartphone with a folding screen and moving mechanism is quite different from ordinary gadgets.
In this case, it would not be appropriate to consider the two incidents on equal footing.
First, the scale of problems faced by iPhone Duo owners remains unknown, as do their causes and how many units are affected in terms of replacements required.
In any case, existing users should immediately contact AppleCare in case of damage to the inner display in the form of cracks or lines.
As for potential buyers, it would be advisable to wait for more details on the problem and its solution from Apple.
Further developments in the next few weeks would shed light on the nature of the problem – isolated production of phones with defects or something bigger. Until that moment, it would be possible to evaluate how Apple would handle its first display problem in a foldable iPhone.
