The president of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that celebrations will lead to "more cases, overloaded health systems, and more deaths" in many places, and has advised people to postpone parties. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "An event cancelled is better than a life cancelled."

Omicron spreading faster than Delta
According to Ghebreyesus , the Omicron form is spreading quicker than the Delta variant and is infecting patients who have already been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 illness.

It would be "unwise" to conclude from early evidence that Omicron was a milder variety than prior ones, according to WHO head scientist Soumya Swaminathan.
