Meta's proposed severance terms stand out because of the combination of salary-based compensation, extended mobility leave and professional transition assistance.
As per reports, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company is offering voluntary exit programme in France that could affect around 100 of its 300 employees in the country. The package offers financial compensation, paid mobility leave and career transition support to employees willing to leave the company.
What is Meta's voluntary exit programme?
As per reports, Meta's voluntary exit options (VEOs) are part of a collective contractual termination procedure in France. The mechanism allows companies to negotiate voluntary workforce reductions with trade unions under French labour laws.According to reports, the proposal has been under discussion since July. Employees interested in participating must submit their applications by November 5.
Meta has not confirmed whether it plans to introduce similar voluntary exit programmes in other countries. The company employs approximately 66,000 people globally.
How much is Meta offering employees?
Meta's proposed severance package is said to be among the more generous voluntary exit offers reported in the technology sector. Under the proposal, eligible employees could receive severance pay of 2.15 months of salary for every year of service.Besides they are being give career transition leave of up to 10 months during which they will be entitled to get 80% of their gross salary. Also included in the voluntary exit offer is career support and entrepreneurship support to help employees interested in starting their own businesses.
Why is Meta offering voluntary exits?
Meta's move comes as the company increasingly focuses on AI and operational efficiency. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously highlighted how AI tools are changing the way projects are developed. He noted that tasks that once required large teams could increasingly be handled by individual employees using AI. The voluntary exit programme in France is part of this broader workforce restructuring. However, this is not the first time Meta has used a collective contractual termination procedure in France. The company entered into a similar agreement in 2023, which resulted in the departure of 88 employees from a workforce of approximately 350. The latest proposal indicates that Meta is once again looking to reduce or restructure its workforce through negotiated voluntary departures.
Google and Microsoft are also offering voluntary exit packages
Meta is not alone in offering employees financial incentives to leave.Google recently expanded its voluntary exit offers to employees in five countries, including France. The initiative reflects the company's efforts to reorganise teams and adapt to changing business priorities.
Microsoft, meanwhile, introduced a buyout programme covering approximately 60,000 eligible employees across several regions, including the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom.
These developments point to a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are increasingly using voluntary separation programmes alongside traditional layoffs.
