After almost 2 and a half years owing pandemic, Bhutan has finally opened its borders

Jigme Thinley Namgyal, the consul general, Royal Bhutan Consulate at Guwahati said, “We will levy Rs.1200 for Indian tourist above age of 12 per person per night and other foreigners will pay 200 USD per person per night.”

This reopening has come with a revised tourism levy, called the sustainable development fee, of $200 per day for international tourists and Rs 1,200 for Indian visitors. Bhutan has closed borders in March 2020.

Thinley Namgyal said, "Tourism is a national assets and we are also trying to remain carbon neutral - that has its own cost and we are developing our infra to make our tourism sustainable so we are taking this levy.”


The border gates between Indian and Bhutan Gelepho and Samdrup Jhonkor has been now opened up for entry of foreigners to Bhutan; earlier only Indian tourists were allowed through this gates.
