A letter to Pompeo may derail North Korea denuclearisation talks again

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo received a letter from the North Korean officials stating that denuclearisation talk between the two countries were "again at stake and might fall apart" as per the CNN reports on Tuesday, citing relevant people.

The letter mentioned that the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's government felt the process of denuclearisation could not move forward.

Earlier on Monday, Washington Post reported that the US President Donald Trump had to call off a visit to North Korea just hours after the trip was announced last week due to an alarming letter delivered directly to Pompeo from a senior North Korean official.


According to CNN, the letter was sent by the former head of North Korea's spy agency, Kim Yong Chol. However, it was not known how it was sent. But as per Washington Post, it said North Korea had been communicating through its UN mission.

The letter also included a warning statement saying that if an agreement could not be reached and the talks of denuclearisation disintegrate, North Korea could resume "nuclear and missile activities", as per CNN report.

North Korea's state media accused US of "double-dealing" and "hatching a criminal plot" on Sunday.

The cancelled North Korea trip by Trump now publicly acknowledges his efforts to denuclearise North Korea has been halted since his June 12 summit with Kim Jong Un.

US intelligence and defense officials did not expect Pompeo's trip to yield positive results as they have frequently expressed doubts about North Korea's willingness to give up its nuclear weapons.
