World leaders gather in Britain for center-left summit
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is due to host a summit on Saturday outside of London with some 20 world leaders on climate change, the economy and global poverty.
Former US President Bill Clinton, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf are be among those due to attend the two-day conference and summit at The Grove hotel, in Watford, according to a provisional list of summit participants.
The World Bank's Pascal Lamy and European Union trade chief Peter Mandelson were also expected, as was South African President Thabo Mbeki. Mbeki will probably hold separate discussions with Brown on developments in Zimbabwe since elections there.
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declined invitations, officials said.
Summit participants were due to hold two round-table discussions focusing on climate change, development, and globalisation, with leaders planning to issue a short joint statement and hold a news conference. The discussions were due to be broadcast live over the Web.
