White House on Wednesday hailed "important and helpful" joint efforts by central banks to stem a global market meltdown after the US Federal Reserve lowered a key interest rate.

WASHINGTON: The White House on Wednesday hailed "important and helpful" joint efforts by central banks to stem a global market meltdown after the US Federal Reserve lowered a key interest rate.

"We respect the independence of the Federal Reserve in setting monetary policy. It is important and helpful that central banks are working in a coordinated way to deal with stress in the financial system," said spokesman Tony Fratto.
