White House open to new stimulus package
The White House was keeping an open mind regarding a second US economic stimulus package but was wary of specific proposals. 2008: Year of financial crisis
"I think we just need to wait and see. We're open to ideas and we'll take a look at what comes our way," spokeswoman Dana Perino said aboard US President George W. Bush's presidential Air Force One airplane.
"What we've seen put forward so far by the leaders in Congress, the Democrats, were elements of a package that we did not think would actually stimulate the economy. So we would want to take a look at anything very carefully," she stressed.
Perino said there would be "ample opportunity" to discuss specific proposals when the US Congress returns, after the November 4 US elections, and that the White House was focused on the financial crisis more than a future stimulus.
"We've had an open mind about it, but what we are focused on right now is the urgent need to get this rescue package implemented," she told reporters.
The White House had repeatedly said as much -- but came under new pressure Monday when US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke endorsed the idea after warning of a possible "protracted slowdown."
