Virgin Atlantic cabin crew to stage 48-hour strike

Virgin Atlantic cabin crew are to stage two 48-hour strikes in the new year in a pay dispute.

LONDON: Virgin Atlantic cabin crew are to stage two 48-hour strikes in the new year in a pay dispute, the airline said Thursday.

Trade union Unite, which represents the cabin crew, said its members voted unanimously to walk out at 6 am on January 9 and January 16.

Virgin said it will do everything possible to insure that flights are not disrupted and criticized the union for supporting the strike despite being involved in formulating the most recent pay offer.

"Virgin Atlantic cabin crew put their heart and soul into their work and can be truly proud of what they've achieved," said Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic. "However, there comes a time when good management has to draw a line in the sand in the interests of all employees. There will be no 11th hour change to our pay offer."

Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd said it had offered a two-year pay increase worth 8.3 per cent more than current salaries.

Unite called on Virgin to return to negotiations.
