USDA awards $1.4 bn in loans for rural electricity

WASHINGTON: The US Agriculture Department said on Thursday it awarded $1.4 billion in loans to rural communities in 13 states for system improvements and the construction or repair of 6,206 miles (1,000 km) of power distribution lines.
USDA said it has selected 18 rural utilities to receive the loans. Among the utilities getting funding include the Sewanee Electric Membership Cooperative in Cumming, Ga.
It will receive nearly $160 million to provide 1,462 miles of new distribution lines and make 553 miles of improvements to existing lines in seven counties, providing upgraded service to 25,299 consumers.
The funding comes from the USDA Rural Development's Utilities Programs, which has awarded about $28 billion in electric loans since 2001.
