Zohran Mamdani’s well-timed ‘slam dunk’ just few days before the New York City mayoral election turned into a viral political moment. Donning a Josh Hart jersey and a black cap at the Knicks' game on Sunday, Mamdani’s casual appearance few days before New York City mayoral election certainly struck a chord with younger voters and sports fans alike, as the calculated yet risky gamble paid off for the newly-elected mayor.

Though Mamdani admitted he’s far more familiar with soccer and cricket than with the Knicks or the NBA, the 34-year-old still proudly displayed his New York spirit, sporting a Josh Hart jersey and a black cap to show his support for the home team.

Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist and son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, made history on Wednesday, becoming New York City’s first Indian-American and Muslim mayor.

According to The Mirror US, Mamdani took a more low-key approach during Sunday’s Knicks vs Chicago Bulls game, choosing to sit farther from the court. The Democratic nominee for New York City mayor was spotted in Section 212, accompanied by comedian The Kid Mero and New York Times reporter Benjamin Oreskes.

“The exhilaration of the last few days of the campaign is like little else, but so is the anxiety,” Mamdani told the New York Times, as quoted by The Mirror US, during the Knicks’ 128-116 victory. Somebody described it to me once like playing tennis but not being able to see the score until the last minute.”

Mamdani was also seen at Murphy’s Bar in Astoria, cheering for the Buffalo Bills alongside Governor Kathy Hochul, a well-known fan of the team.
