Where and when will Zohran Mamdani be sworn in?

Zohran Mamdani will officially become New York City’s next mayor moments after midnight on New Year’s Day. The private swearing-in ceremony will take place beneath City Hall Park at the long-shuttered Old City Hall subway station. New York Attorney General Letitia James will administer the oath of office during the small, closed event.

“When I take my oath from the station at the dawn of the New Year, I will do so humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity, and honored to carry forward our city’s legacy of greatness,” Mamdani said.

James, a vocal supporter of Mamdani, said she was honored to take part. “Our subways connect us all, and they represent exactly what our next mayor is fighting for: a city every New Yorker can thrive in,” she wrote on social media, as per a report by The New York Post.

Why choose an abandoned subway station?

Mamdani said the location reflects New York’s history of bold ambition. The Old City Hall subway station was part of the city’s very first subway line, which opened in 1904. Though decommissioned in 1945, the station remains an active turnaround for the downtown 6 train, as per a report by The New York Post.

The space is known for its Guastavino tiles and ornate chandeliers, but it remains inaccessible to the public unless visitors secure a rare ticket through tours run by the New York Transit Museum.

Following the underground swearing-in, Mamdani will take part in a public inauguration later on New Year’s Day. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a longtime Democratic Socialist ally, will administer the oath of office Thursday afternoon outside City Hall.

Mamdani’s team has also planned a large block party near City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan, with officials expecting more than 40,000 people to attend. The celebration will include street closures south of Canal Street along Broadway, also known as the Canyon of Heroes, a route typically reserved for ticker-tape parades.

The transition team has described the event as a “man of the people” celebration, drawing supporters into the city center despite forecasts calling for below-freezing temperatures, as per a report by The New York Post.

What makes this swearing-in different?

The mix of a midnight ceremony, an abandoned subway station, and a massive public gathering sets Mamdani’s inauguration apart from past mayors. His team says the format reflects his political style and priorities, tying together history, public space, and accessibility in one of the city’s most symbolic settings.
