Zohran Mamdani has made history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor and, at 34, will also become the youngest mayor the city has seen in over a century when he assumes office on January 1, 2026. While Mamdani’s campaign drew national attention, his wife, Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, has largely stayed out of the public spotlight.

The couple’s story began in 2021 when they met on the dating app Hinge. Their relationship quickly blossomed, and by October 2024, they were engaged. In December of the same year, Mamdani and Duwaji hosted a stunning nikah and engagement celebration in Dubai, where Duwaji grew up and where her family remains based.

The event took place on the rooftop of Vida Creek Harbour, offering breathtaking views of the Burj Khalifa. Dubai florist LMF Dubai transformed the space into a white garden using soft ivory roses, lisianthus, and fresh ruscus, blending delicate florals with trailing greenery against the city’s pink sunset. Rama Duwaji wore a silver-toned white gown, while Mamdani donned a navy-blue kurta.


The Dubai celebration was followed by a simple courthouse wedding in February 2025 at the Lower Manhattan city clerk’s office. Later, in July, the couple hosted a three-day wedding celebration at Mamdani’s family estate in Uganda, combining intimate family moments with vibrant cultural traditions.

Mamdani is the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academic of Indian descent, Mahmood Mamdani. Despite his prominent lineage and high-profile political rise, Forbes estimates his net worth at approximately $200,000, considerably less than his former opponent, Andrew Cuomo, whose wealth is estimated at $10 million.
