Why are voters turning colder on JD Vance?
Voters appear to be growing increasingly skeptical of Vice President JD Vance, according to a new CNN poll that paints a difficult picture for the White House’s second-in-command. Fresh data from CNN in partnership with SSRS shows that Vance’s approval numbers have slipped significantly in just a matter of weeks. In early January, 41 percent of adults said they approved of the way he was handling his job, while 58 percent disapproved. That already left him 17 points underwater.
By late March, the numbers had worsened. The second CNN/SSRS survey, conducted from March 26 to March 30, found that only 37 percent of Americans now approve of Vance’s performance, while 62 percent disapprove. That pushes his net approval to minus 25, marking an eight-point drop in just over two months, as per a report by Newsweek.
The trend is especially striking because both sides of the equation moved in the wrong direction. Approval fell by four points, while disapproval rose by four points over the same period. This suggests not only that some previous supporters may be cooling on him, but also that critics are becoming more consolidated in their view.

How much has the approval rating dropped?
The polling decline arrives during a period of heightened political tension. The administration has been dealing with fallout from the conflict involving Iran, while voters continue to express concern over domestic economic uncertainty. Recent polling has also shown weakening public support for the administration’s broader handling of the conflict, which may be contributing to Vance’s numbers.
As vice president, Vance has remained closely aligned with the White House agenda, frequently defending administration policy in public appearances, as per a report by Newsweek.
Speaking alongside the president in the Oval Office on March 17, Vance said the administration was addressing long-standing issues that others had avoided.
He also pushed back on speculation of division within the White House, saying critics were trying to “drive a wedge” and added, “What the president said consistently going back to 2015, and I agreed with him, is that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon,” while noting the action was taken “under the president’s leadership.”

What does this mean for 2028?
The approval slide is also raising questions about Vance’s political future. Prediction market numbers cited in recent reporting suggest his odds of securing the Republican nomination in 2028 have dropped from 53 percent six months ago to 37 percent by March 31, as per a report by Newsweek.
Despite that decline, he remains among the leading names being discussed for the next presidential race. Still, the current numbers indicate that public confidence has weakened at a crucial stage.
Attention will currently remain fixed on whether this decline becomes a longer-term trend or whether Vance can stabilize his standing as the year unfolds.
With congressional battles, foreign policy developments, and economic headlines likely to dominate the coming months, his approval rating may become one of the key indicators to watch heading into both the midterms and the early 2028 conversation.
