Health risks of long space travel

Long-term space travel may be harmful to an astronaut's health. Astronauts may be exposed to radiation equivalent to 1,000 chest X-rays during a six-month mission, according to current estimates. This increases their risk of developing major illnesses like cancer, damage to the brain system, bone loss, and heart disease. Cutting down on space travel time is essential to lowering these health hazards. NASA has funded $725,000 in the Pulsed Plasma Rocket (PPR) system, a novel technology intended to reduce the time required for a journey to Mars, to address this difficulty.

The Pulsed Plasma Rocket (PPR)

The PPR propulsion system effectively generates thrust by using superheated plasma pulses. As part of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Program, the engine design is currently being optimized, and proof-of-concept experiments are being carried out. Plans are also underway to build a spacecraft propelled by PPR that can securely transport people to Mars.


The PPR's primary benefit is its capacity to launch spacecraft at incredibly fast velocities. A spacecraft outfitted with this technology can reach speeds of up to 100,000 miles per hour, producing 10,000 newtons of thrust at a specific impulse of 5,000 seconds. The spacecraft is already designed to demand more energy and propellant as it gets closer to its destination to slow down for landing on Mars.

Future of space exploration

As per the reports of Yahoo News, the PPR system will take almost 20 years to become operational for human missions to Mars, even once phase two is finished. On the other hand, its effective execution could significantly improve our capacity to investigate the solar system. The technology may someday enable journeys as far as Pluto, according to Howe Industries President Troy Howe. The PPR has the potential to significantly increase human space exploration opportunities and facilitate travel to far-off places.
