Yale University has announced a major expansion of its financial aid program that could dramatically change who can afford to attend the Ivy League school. Starting this academic year, the university will eliminate tuition costs for a far broader group of families. The move reinforces Yale’s long-standing position that financial background should not limit academic opportunity.

Who qualifies for free tuition at Yale?

Under the new policy, Yale will fully eliminate all education costs for families earning less than $100,000 a year. For households earning under $200,000, the university confirmed it will provide financial aid that meets or exceeds tuition costs, as per a report by The US Sun.

Previously, Yale waived tuition, housing, and meal plan expenses only for families earning up to $75,000. The expanded income threshold marks a significant shift, opening the door to many more middle-income families.

Why is Yale expanding its financial aid program?

Yale University provost Scott Strobel described the move as a strategic investment tied directly to the school’s mission.

“This strategic investment is central to our mission to educate exceptional students from all backgrounds,” Strobel said. “The benefits are evident as these talented students enrich the Yale campus and go on to serve their communities after graduation.”

By raising the full-coverage limit to $100,000, Yale estimates that nearly half of Americans with children aged 6 to 17 could potentially qualify for waived education costs, as per a report by The US Sun.
